Osteoarthritis of Knee and Running

Q. I like to run. Should I be worried about effect of running on my Knees?

A. It is difficult to give a strong recommendation, but the current data suggests that a moderate level of running doesnt increase the risk of osteoarthritis of Knees in otherwise healthy individuals. A word of caution for individuals with history of injury from earlier trauma or overuse, Unstable knee or those who are over weight, as running with these known risk factors may accelerate the onset of osteoarthritis.

Q. I am starting to have occasional pain in my knees, whether I can continue with my running or morning walks?

A. Running / Brisk walk with its combined effect of helping you loose weight and at the same time strengthening your muscles, might even help in reducing pain and stiffness, but it is important to know when to stop. If you observe an increase in knee pain above your base line pain level, stop running and take rest. Try to resume activity after few days of rest. Consider alternate exercises if pain regularly worsens with running. Another important aspect is choice of footwear and running surface. Prefer Flat soled light shoes and a soft tract to reduce load and impact on knee.

Q. I am over weight and have started to have pain in my knees, is there a better exercise than walking if I want to exercise and loose weight?

A. Running is not a very good option in over-weight patients; Cycling and swimming are better exercise for fitness and weight loss for over weight patients without increasing the risk of aggravating knee pain. Consult a specialist for thorough evaluation and characterization of your symptoms, to help you select a suitable exercise plan for you.

Q. I regularly have pain in my knee, should I restrict my walking?

A. Walking may increase pain in osteoarthritic knees, especially if you are sedentary, but at the same time helps you shed weight, lift mood and strengthen muscles.Seek a specialist advice and start gradually, dont go full force into it. If pain increases, listen to your body and take a break. Restart when you are comfortable and steadily increase the time and intensity of your walk.

Q. What is better running or walking on Treadmill or in open?

A. As far as fitness quotient and calorie consumption is concerned both are same. Chances of fall and injury are lesser on treadmill with added advantage of comfortable climate condition. But a word of caution, long duration running at constant speed on hard surface of treadmill, puts repetitive stress on same points in your knees and may lead to cartilage damage. Running in open makes you alter your pace from time to time and with differing terrain the stress passed on knees is less, in addition running in open also exercises other muscle groups and has a relaxing effect on your mind. But, if you love treadmill, remember to change the speed and pace of your workout from time to time.
